This is Joel.

This is Joel.  —>

This is Joel’s tumor.

It’s pretty big.  But Joel’s God is bigger.  Joel’s really really big God hopes that you will pour yourself out, extending your faith as far as you can, partnering with Him in the miraculous act He is going to perform.  That way you share in the reward of God’s glory when Joel is healed.  Bye-Bye Tumor.

Joel was diagnosed with an Atypical Teratoid/ Rhabdoid Tumor (AT/RT) in January of 2010. He had a surgery to remove the tumor and was undergoing 54 weeks of treatment including chemotherapy and radiation. He never finished those 54 weeks, because 10 months after his diagnosis, in October of 2010, he had a tumor recurrence. Joel was declared terminal, we were referred to Hospice and we signed a do not resuscitate form. From that point on, Joel only received medical treatment that was palliative, meaning it is designed to add quality of life as someone is dying, it is not curative, but hopefully reduces symptoms. Joel did not die. Joel had clumps of tumor cells in his spinal fluid, and ten days later, with no medical treatment in between, Joel’s spinal fluid was completely clear of cancer cells.
As the spinal fluid remained clear, and palliative treatment began, Joel did better than expect and we made the decision to treat the tumor in his brain with radiation. After the radiation, Joel’s MRIs were clear until July of 2011, when Joel had a brain tumor that damaged the 6th cranial nerve that controls Joel’s right eye, turning his right eye in, (this tumor was found just after Joel was finally seeing straight because we had a surgery performed to compensate for the 6th cranial nerve that controlled Joel’s left eye, damaged in the initial tumor resection.) We treated this second tumor recurrence with radiation to prevent more damage from being done to Joel’s cranial nerves.
In October of 2011, an MRI showed that the tumor treated with radiation in Joel’s brain was gone, but he had two new tumors in his spine and one new tumor in his brain, these were Joel’s 3rd, 4th and 5th recurrences. This prompted another discussion about Joel’s imminent death. We were told that they did not understand the year we had, but this was what they had expected to happen the year before when they told us Joel had a few weeks to four months to live.
At this point, we put Joel back on an iv chemotherapy, still just palliative, and in December 2011 one of the spinal tumors and the brain tumor were both gone, the remaining spinal tumor was shrinking. All of our doctors were shocked and thrilled. Our next MRI in March of 2012 showed us that the shrinking tumor in Joel’s spine was growing. It was blocking 50% of the spinal cord. If we let it keep growing it would paralyze Joel, within days Joel stopped walking with his walker, (something he had only begun to do in January.) We treated Joel’s spinal tumor with radiation. This tumor died and Joel began walking without his walker in April.
In May of 2012 we stopped all the palliative chemotherapy because if we continued giving this kind of chemotherapy it would give Joel leukemia. Joel had clear MRIs until November of 2012 when we discovered his sixth tumor recurrence (seventh tumor.) This tumor was filling the base of his spine. It was huge and growing very quickly. Once again we had to treat Joel with radiation to stop his intense pain and prevent the loss of his bowel and bladder control. Once again, we were told Joel was dying, and this time not to expect more periods of remission because the speed with which this tumor had grown meant it was a new phase of the disease and Joel was now on a downward spiral.
Joel was in intense pain, treated with morphine and fentanyl, he stopped walking entirely and moved very little. A few days before Christmas Joel’s pain lifted and, a MRI in March 2013 showed that the spinal tumor was gone but that Joel had a new very small tumor in his cerebellum. Joel is walking again and playing. He is no long taking any pain medication and he is very happy.

Joel is in the middle of a new experimental therapy to treat the tumor in his cerebellum. So far, that tumor has not grown or shrunk, and his last MRI showed that he may have a second tumor in his cerebellum, but the results were not conclusive.

Joel is growing and thriving. Each of Joel’s seven tumor recurrences should have triggered many quick growing tumors that would lead to his death in a matter of months, that’s just what always happens with AT/RTs. We keep praying for Joel, and marveling at the amazing ways God has been faithful.
On the right hand side of the home page, underneath Joel’s picture, the posts are organized into categories. So, you can click to see videos, pictures, art, or under “Mommy Theology” you can read about the journey of faith we’ve been on for almost two years now.

    Today I was with a group of ladies in Wellington that I barely know. One of them has a 4 year old daughter named Phoebe who apparently is a little prayer warrior. I was touched and amused when the mother said that Phoebe once laid her hands on someone and said “God, would you bless this man.” Later I described Ryan and Amy’s situation and asked for prayer. The mother listened for a while and then said, “Oh, is your grandson’s name Joel? A friend of ours contacted us through Facebook and asked us to pray for him, so we have been praying. Phoebe prayed that Jesus would make him better and that he would not be afraid.”

    My name is Amanda. I am Sarah’s son, Lincoln’s, “aunt”. Lincoln’s father is my brother. Sarah posted this on her myspace, and i felt compelled to reach out to you.
    I am so deeply sorry to hear about Joel. I have an 8 month old son, who is my world. As I read Joel’s story and sobbed, I couldn’t imagine what to say to your family. I am sorry you have to experience this time of despair. But I am praying that your family will see the greatness of God, and that He will heal little Joel. So innocent are the children in our world, they deserve nothing but the best. Prayers, tears, and thoughts are with you!

  17. Kristin Hill on January 26, 2010 4:09 am

    We are standing in the gap here in Nashville Tn!! Praise God, for He is the GREAT PHYSICIAN. Miracles of Healing are NOT of the old as some confess because God’s Word says “I am the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.” “The work that I do you will do; you shall do even greater works than Me” according to John 14:12. It does take faith though, faith of a mustard seed. Confess God’s Word with AUTHORITY over baby Joels body constantly, it will INCREASE your faith, and according to Isaiah 55:11, God’s Words will not return to Him void. WE are to return His Word to Him by giving it voice!!! “So shall my word be that goes forth out of My mouth; it shall NOT return to me void (without producing any effects, useless), but it shall accomplish that which I please and purpose, and it shall prosper in the thing in which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11. “I create the fruit of the lips; Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, saith the Lord; and I will HEAL HIM, according to Isaiah 57:19! So, Father God YOUR Word is manifest in baby Joel’s body causing that tumor to DISAPPEAR and we charge his body in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the authority of His Holy Word to be healed and made whole in Jesus’ Name.

    Hi Ryan and Amy,

    I am in a small group at First Presbyterian Church with Joel’s grandmother Erin. Our small group will be praying for you and your family. We trust that our amazing God will hold baby Joel in the hollow of His hand this year and always. I claim the verses from Isaiah 43 for you and for Joel. When you pass through the rivers they will not sweep over you and when you walk through the fire you will not be burned because God who redeemed you will be with you.
    In Christ,

  36. Joe Henry on February 1, 2010 3:55 pm

    Ryan and Amy, I found out about your precious little boy through Richard Kelley and have been praying for him ever since. My 4 year old daughter, Phoebe, has also been praying for him every night when she says her prayers. She also prayers for his mommy and daddy and big brothers. God is in control and on the throne and we are believing with you that this situation will ultimately be to bring glory to Him. We are praying for God’s healing and protection over Joel’s entire body and spirit. God bless you both and your precious angel!

  38. Paige Hornback on February 3, 2010 8:18 pm

    Still thinking and praying for you every day. I check this site daily to see how sweet Joel is doing and see what your prayer requests are. You should know that God has burdened so many people to pray for your family…most of whom may never write a note here. Sometimes people simply don’t have words, or know what to say. But, even when we don’t know what to say, we can pray! And, when we don’t know what to pray…the holy spirit intercedes for us. Thank you, God, for knowing our hearts so deeply that we need no words to come to you. God, give great comfort to this family and make each day hold a victory in your name. Amen!

  50. Paige Hornback on February 8, 2010 9:22 am

    A few weeks ago as I was praying for Joel, God led me to Matthew 15:21-31. Two parables–both about healing. This morning, God gave me this for you: Psalm 94:18-19
    When I said “My foot is slipping, your love, O Lord, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.”
    God, you are good…continue to support this family and show your love for them. Bring speedy, speedy healing and recovery, and leave no room for anxiety in the midst of it.
    “Do not be anxious in anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the PEACE of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Phil 4:6

  57. Paige Hornback on March 18, 2010 1:24 pm

    A song that I read in my quiet time…a Hymn with great relevance:

    He giveth more grace when the burdens grow greater;
    He sendeth more strength where the labors increase;
    To added afflictions He addeth His Mercy;
    To multiplied sorrows, His multiplied peace.
    His love has no limit; His grace has no measure;
    His power has no boundary known unto men.
    For out of His infinite riches in Jesus,
    He giveth and giveth and giveth again.
    When we have exhausted our store of endurance,
    When our strength has failed ere the day is half done;
    When we’ve reached the end of our hoarded resources;
    Our Father’s full giving has only begun.

    **May it be so for you that God’s resources of Mercy would be overflowing, may He “giveth and giveth and giveth again” and remind you of His love for you***

    Your faith so amazing……May faith heals Him….

    We believe that praises will abound in heaven because there will be full knowledge in heaven. The fuller the knowledge, the fuller the praise. Everything will be clear when we go before the Lord on that day. The things that are unclear to us today will be clear to us on that day. On that day we will see the Lord’s excellent will in every step of the Spirit’s discipline.

    If some of our footsteps had not been stopped by the Holy Spirit, we cannot imagine how pitiful our fall would have been! Many things, thousands and even millions of things which we do not see today, will become clear to us on that day. When we see everything on that day, we will bow our head and praise Him, saying, “Lord, You were never wrong.”

    “Lord, You were never wrong.” Every step of the Spirit’s discipline is God’s work in us. Had we not become sick that one time, what would have become of us? Had we not failed that one time, what would have become of us? What we faced may have been a problem, but through facing that problem we may have avoided greater problems. What we encountered may have been a misfortune, but through that encounter we may have avoided greater misfortunes. On that day we will see why the Lord allowed all these things to happen to us. Today the Lord is leading us on, every step of the way. On that day we will bow our heads and say, “Lord, I was a fool, because I did not praise You that day. I was a fool, because I did not give thanks to You that day.”

    Therefore, today we must learn to say, “Lord, I cannot understand what You are doing, but I know that You cannot be wrong.”

    Ryan, Amy, Caleb, Isaac, and Joel:

    My family is praying for you and your family everyday. Thank you for posting pitures, videos, stories and updates. It is such a joy to see Joel smiling and laughing. It truly does brng a smile to my face to see that you are all still going very strong and are very determined to beat this illness. And with God by your side, you will conquer this…I have faith!

    Lord, you love our child as You love all children,
    Bring healing to our child who is not well. Stay by his side and comfort him through this trying time. Keep us ever mindful of Your loving presence Bless us with Your powerful healing and comfort us also. Thank You for hearing our prayer!

    He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
    – Isaiah 40:29-31

  85. Nicole Green on September 17, 2012 7:57 am

    I am new to Third Day Victory church, my husband and family started attending this summer. We went to a church picnic and Blake shared with us about your son. We have a special needs son that has had several difficulties, not as life threatening as yours but hard on us. His name is Noah. I am a nurse and specialize in neurosciences and saw your recent post about the diet regarding seizures. We started taking our son to an Applied Kinesiologist and have seen amazing results. Now our whole family goes there and about 20 people in our extended family. I wish I could speak with you personally to relay the results….life changing! A lot of Dr. Jared’s medicine is nutrition based. If you go to this practitioner with a referral he will give 1/2 off his new patient cost. If you chose to go, say Nicole Green sent you.

    Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God’s word is not chained. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with Him, we will also live with Him; if we endure, we will also reign with Him. (2 Timothy 2:8-12)

    After watching Meet Joel – My Last Day, it was put on my heart to write you to tell you that not only is Joel an amazing boy, he has amazing parents. Your faith and outlook on Joel’s life and his journey are truly inspirational! I think what was so touching for me was how you were able to stop focusing your prayers on the fear of Joel dying and instead just on God’s grace for him. I know what that did to my heart but I can’t really explain that to you…all I can do is say thank you. Thank you for sharing your story and because of that, changing my life a little. Blessings to you all!

  96. Steve on May 21, 2013 9:57 am

    I saw your video on youtube, and well YOU GUYS ARE INCREDIBLE!! Honestly your story is just so motivational!! Your faith in God is just AMAZING, it’s beyond what words can begin to describe! I pray you continue to stay strong in the Lord, and to trust that ALL things work out for good for those who love Him, and you clearly love Him so all thing will work out for good!
    Joel means “Jehovah is the Lord” and Joel’s life is a true demonstration of that meaning, his very existence signifies that Jehovah is Lord, and what’s not possible with man is certainly possible with God.
    I will definitely keep Joel, your little angel, in my prayers, he’s truly a beautiful boy. And i will keep your family in my prayers as well.

    Hi Joel and family from Australia! It is the end of summer here, so its starting to get cold, but that means it will be summer there for you soon! I hope you have a great summer with your family.
    When you are all better you should come visit Australia, we have lots of wonderful animals I’m sure you would love to meet, and some wonderful things to see too… if you’re lucky you might even be able to find some Australian food in America, vegimite spread thin on hot toast with butter – I promise you’ll love it!
    I hope you are feeling well and are having a good time with your (obviously) amazing family.
    Stay well buddy, you’re doing great :)

  116. Tiffany on March 12, 2014 11:39 am

    I was on your Southwest flight to Denver, and happen to live in Fort Collins as well. I watched as the crew gave the boys all the goodies, and was truly touched by everything that I was witnessing. I was curious, and googled Joel when the crew thanked you for choosing Southwest. I just want to say that I have been non-stop thinking about your little boy. I pray with everything that I have that Joel will get the miracle he deserves. He and the rest of the family are in my thoughts.

  117. Julian on March 13, 2014 7:29 pm

    Hi Joel from Australia…
    I’m sorry you didnt get to visit here buddy, there is so much you would have loved… but I know you are seeing things we wouldn’t believe… beyond our dreams and understanding.
    Though I dont know you, I love knowing that you and your family will be looked after in all things.
    Rest well good and faithful soldier.

    To Joel’s wonderful family, mine is such a little grief compared to yours, but I grieve with you and will carry what I can of him in my heart for you. He is known and loved here in a small town in Ausutralia… while you sleep dreaming of him I will carry him in my waking thoughts.
